What is Panchakarma? - Ayurvedic Detoxification Treatment, Ayurvedic Cleansing, Ayurveda Purification Spa
The term Panchakarma is a compound word in Sanskrit -the first part Pancha means Five(5), and the second part Karma means an Act or a Procedure. Therefore, in Ayurveda, the term Panchakarma implies five evacuative Ayurvedic therapies performed for the purpose of eliminating the dislodged impurities (dosas) – emesis (vamana), purgation (virejana), nasal evacuation (nasya), non–lubricant enema (kasaya vasti), and lubricant enema (Anuvasana or sneha basti). In short, the term Panchakarma (within the context of Ayurveda) refers to a five-step cleansing/detoxification process. It must be noted, however, that your Ayurveda specialist will determine the kind of procedures, and the types of medicines that may be appropriate for you after she has evaluated you. It is not necessary that everyone undergo all the five procedures.
Ayurveda is not just an alternative branch of medicine, it is a lifestyle. In order for Ayurvedic medicines to be effective, often significant lifestyle changes are necessary. Ayurveda focuses on the whole person -the body, the mind and the consciousness. Therefore, Ayurveda places no less importance on having a stress-free state of mind that is places on the cure and care for the human body.
We accumulate large amounts of toxins (ashudhi) in our body & mind due to our bad eating habits, and our daily stresses. As these toxins accumulate in our bodies, they cause imbalances in our body, mind and consciousness (imbalance of our doshas) resulting in various diseases and a general feeling of being unwell. Ayurvedic Panchakarma usually takes between 5 to 8 days in a relaxing retreat environment, and restores our body, mind, and spirit to a natural state of balance.
In all likelihood, you may be guided (over the phone or through other modes of communication) to begin your preparations for your Panchakarma detoxification and cleansing experience approximately one to two weeks prior to your actual arrival at your Ayurveda retreat/spa. You will probably be given a one to two week home cleansing program that may require you to make some changes to your diet, and your daily routine. Some mild, herbal cleansing may also be suggested.
Upon your arrival at your Panchakarma retreat, you will probably receive an introductory presentation, and a detailed review of the entire Panchakarma program. An Ayurvedic practitioner will then assess your dosha (basic Ayurvedic body-mind constitution), identify dosha imbalances, and put together an Ayurvedic Panchakarma regime that is individualized to your specific needs. The treatments are usually custom designed to help correct your energy imbalances. Ayurvedic body treatments that you will receive may consist of one or more of the following: full-body massage with herbal oils, herbal paste massage, sweat treatment, shiro-dhara (warm herbal oil gently applied in a stream over your forehead), and Self-administered medicated enemas. Your meals will usually include specially prepared Ayurvedic cleansing diet. You may also be asked to relax and rest quite a bit, and also participate in any yoga and/or meditation sessions.
