Ayurveda Natural Medicines, Natural Medicinal Herbs, Ayurvedic Medicines and Herbal Remedies
Ayurveda is essentially a holistic approach to health that relies on making use of natural herbal remedies. Ayurveda has been practiced in India for well over 5,000 years. Principles of Ayurvedic medicine can be traced back to several sacred Indian texts written in Sanskrit between 1500 BC and 400 AD. The central theme to Ayurveda philosophy is to prevent illness by maintaining balance in the body, mind, and consciousness.
Ayurvedic herbs are being used worldwide to treat many ailments, including Acne, Alzheimer's disease, Anemia, Anxiety, Arthritis, Asthma, Attention deficit syndrome, Behavioral disorders, Chronic constipation, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Circulatory diseases, Cognitive disorders, Dementia, Diabetes mellitus, Diarrhea, Digestive disorders, Dysentery, Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), Eye disorders, Heart disease, Hemorrhage, Herpes, High blood pressure, Hypertension, Immune system impairment, Insomnia, Irritable bowel syndrome, Joint disorders, Learning disabilities, Leucorrhoea, Libido, Obesity, Parkinson's disease, Perimenopausal problems, Premenstrual syndrome, Respiratory disorders, Rheumatism, Rteriosclerosis, Skin disorders, Ulcers, Urinary system diseases, and Uterine fibroids.
However, it is important to note that just because an herbal product is considered to be a natural medicine, it would not be prudent for you to assume that they may be safe or appropriate for your particular health condition. The reason being, even though the herbal products are indeed natural medicinal products, most of them are not natural to a human body. Women who are pregnant or nursing should be especially cautious about using any herbal supplements.
Considering that US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies all herbal products as dietary supplements, all natural herbal medicines and Ayurveda herbs being sold in US (including traditional Ayurveda natural medicines) are not subject to traditional clinical trials (unlike conventional prescription medicines) to determine their efficacy and/or safety. However, we must remember that the traditional allopathic clinical trials are carried out only for a few years, and are often flawed. Ayurvedic herbal medicines, on the other hand, have been perfected and time tested over more than 5000 years -far longer than any allopathic medicine clinical trials that we know of.
Of course, this does not mean that you should assume all herbal medicines/supplements are safe. Since all herbs (natural medicines) are effectively unregulated in US, it is in your best interest to consult with an experienced and a well-qualified Ayurveda professional before your start medicating yourself with any of the many herbal supplements (Ayurvedic Dietary Supplements) that may be available over the counter at your corner herbal products store. If you are unsure of an herbal supplement, check out FDA site for updated safety and warnings about dietary supplements.
